This limited edition blind embossed relief print is part of The Cameo Series which spotlights native plants encountered by the artist while exploring Western North Carolina. Printed from a hand-carved block, the absence of ink enhances the embossed shadows, emphasizing the intricate details of each plant’s form. Columbine is a captivating native wildflower that thrives across the Eastern areas of the United States, adapting to a variety of soil and light conditions from woodland edges to riverbanks and rocky shores. This perennial plant blooms in late spring, showcasing striking red and yellow flowers that measure about 1.5 inches across and are perched on long stems. Reaching a height of 1 to 2 feet, Columbine prefers partial shade to filtered sunlight for optimal growth. The vibrant blooms attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies.
Known scientifically as Aquilegia canadensis, the genus name Aquilegia derives from the Latin word “aquila,” meaning “eagle,” a nod to the petal shape that resembles an eagle’s claw. Native Americans historically utilized parts of the columbine plant to treat various ailments such as heart and kidney problems, headaches, bladder issues, and fever.

I have a husband who pays attention, and so unexpectedly, on Christmas morning a couple of years ago, I unwrapped a cardboard tube. Inside it was a twin set – two prints, the prints I loved and wanted – the sweetest gift. I was ELATED. We had them specialty framed, and they live happily in unison together above our mantle, where I knew they always belonged. Thank you, Lauren! Thank you for giving visual life to a feeling and a memory that so many of us know, love, and cherish. You are MAGIC.

Since my husband and I moved from the southeast to the northwest last summer, I have tried to fill our new home with as many pieces and treasures from our former Appalachian home as I can. Lauren’s print is like a window back to the hills and the woods that we loved so much. Thank you so much for creating something that brings so much joy to my soul.

Lauren’s work is all over our home. I have nothing but good things to say. Her work is stunning, detailed, and clearly labor intensive. If we had a choice, we would live in Boone, but can’t, but we do keep the magic of that area here with her work.
