An original design is drawn onto a smooth block of wood or linoleum. The artist carefully carves away areas of the block, leaving raised lines and shapes. The raised areas are applied with ink using a roller or brayer.
Paper is then placed on top of the inked block and rolled through a printing press to make an impression. The block is repeatedly inked and pressed for each print until the limited edition is complete.
Multicolor prints are made utilizing a reduction carving method where the artist continually carves the same block between each layer of color to develop the image. The inks are custom mixed and test printed to achieve the perfect shade.
