What is a limited edition?

A limited edition is a set number of original prints produced by a hand-carved design at the same time. No further impressions or prints will be produced after the edition is complete. Each published print is numbered, titled and signed by the artist.

The edition number is represented by a fraction placed on the lower right hand side of the print. The number above the slash is the number assigned to the individual print and the number below the slash is the number of prints in the edition. Example: 25/100

What is a reduction print?

The reduction process is a printmaking technique used to create multi-layered images from a single block. After printing the first layer (often the lightest color), the artist carves away parts of the block, reducing the printable surface. The block is then inked again in a new color and printed over the first layer. This cycle of carving and printing continues—typically from lightest to darkest—until the image is complete.

Because the block is altered after each layer, it can’t be reused to make more prints later. This makes reduction prints true limited editions, with each layer carefully planned in advance and no possibility of reprinting once the process is complete.

Find out more about this process on the process page.

What is a Trial Proof?

A Trail Proof (sometimes called a working proof or progress proof) is a test print made by the artist during the process of developing a print. It allows the artist to evaluate the carving, composition, registration, or color choices before finalizing the design. Trail proofs often differ from the final edition and may show changes or adjustments that were made along the way. These prints are not typically included in the numbered edition but may be retained by the artist for reference or sold as unique works.

What is an Artist Proof?

An Artist Proof is a print pulled outside the numbered edition, traditionally reserved for the artist’s personal use. Artist proofs are identical (or nearly identical) to the prints in the standard edition and are often marked “A.P.” or “A/P” instead of a number. In modern printmaking, a small number of artist proofs—usually 10% or less of the total edition size—may be created. Though historically not sold, artist proofs are now often made available to collectors and are considered especially desirable due to their limited nature.

Do you offer giclé prints (digital prints)?

To preserve the exclusivity and value of my handmade limited editions, I’ve chosen not to produce digital reproductions. The tactile qualities of hand-pulled prints—such as texture, embossing, and the subtle variations that occur with each impression—are essential to the work and cannot be replicated through digital means.

When will my order ship?

Orders are mailed within 1-3 business days of purchase.

Do you ship internationally?

Orders can be place outside the United States through The White Crowe Etsy Shop.

If a print is sold out, will it ever be back in stock?

The White Crowe prints are primarily created using the reduction printmaking process, a method in which the printing block is carved away in stages to apply each new layer of color. Because the block is gradually destroyed during the process, it cannot be reused. Once an edition sells out, it cannot be reprinted—preserving the rarity and long-term value of each piece.
