This limited edition blind embossed relief print is part of The Cameo Series which spotlights native plants encountered by the artist while exploring Western North Carolina. Printed from a hand-carved block, the absence of ink enhances the embossed shadows, emphasizing the intricate details of each plant’s form. Much like a cameo role in a film or a piece of cameo jewelry that highlights an individual, each piece in this series focuses on a particular plant, bringing attention to its specific role within the natural ecosystem.

Wild violets (Viola sororia) are charming perennial plants native to North America, often found in woodlands, meadows, and shaded lawns. These small plants typically reach a height of 4 to 6 inches and form dense mats of heart-shaped, dark green leaves. The leaves emerge directly from the rootstock, creating a lush ground cover.

Blooming in early spring, wild violets produce delicate, five-petaled flowers that range in color from deep violet to blue, and sometimes white. Each flower features a distinctive white throat with purple veining. Wild violets prefer moist, well-drained soils and partial to full shade, thriving in natural and garden settings. They not only provide early-season color but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to the health and diversity of local ecosystems.
