This limited edition blind embossed relief print is part of The Cameo Series which spotlights native plants encountered by the artist while exploring Western North Carolina. Printed from a hand-carved block, the absence of ink enhances the embossed shadows, emphasizing the intricate details of each plant’s form. Much like a cameo role in a film or a piece of cameo jewelry that highlights an individual, each piece in this series focuses on a particular plant, bringing attention to its specific role within the natural ecosystem.

The Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is one of the most common ferns in the Southeast, with its evergreen fronds adding year-round beauty to woods and shady hillsides. Preferring moist, well-drained soil, this adaptable fern is also remarkably drought-tolerant. It thrives in partial to full shade but can handle some sun if provided with sufficient moisture, and it grows naturally in a wide range of soil types and conditions. Typically growing 18 to 30 inches tall, Christmas fern spreads by creeping rhizomes, forming dense clumps that can be easily divided in spring or fall.

In early spring, Christmas fern’s tightly coiled fiddleheads emerge silvery green before maturing into long, dark green fronds. The brown and scaly stipe (stalk below the blade) supports a lanceolate (spear-shaped) blade with regularly arranged pinnae (leaflets). Mature plants first produce upright, fertile fronds with round sori (reproductive structures) in rows, followed by shorter, arching sterile fronds.

Opinions on the origin of its common name vary, with some attributing it to its evergreen nature at Christmas and others to the stocking-like shape of its pinnae (leaflets).
